A life with more than one chapter.

A search-and-rescue dog whose later years included listening to children read.

Bretagne, a Golden Retriever owned and handled by Denise Corliss, took part in search-and-rescue work following the September 11 attacks. The American Kennel Club's account also records a quieter chapter of her life.
She retired from disaster search-and-rescue work at nine and later served as a reading assistance dog and goodwill ambassador. Bretagne died in June 2016, aged sixteen. In 2017, the AKC honoured her with an award for canine excellence.
Our reflection: a working dog's life is larger than a list of assignments. Changes in routine, the people alongside them and their later years also deserve to be remembered. Ordinary family companions deserve that same attention; a life does not need public achievements to matter.
